Upon my return to Denmark with my wife at the end of 2021, after several years living and working as a photojournalist in China, I found myself in a peculiar state. The demanding nature of my profession had left me exhausted, a bit disillusioned, and oddly detached from a once all-consuming passion—photography.
This disconnect lingered for quite some time after settling back in Denmark. I struggled to muster the enthusiasm to simply pick up my camera, step outside, and capture the world around me. That drive, that innate urge to explore through the lens, had inexplicably faded, leaving a void that seemed insurmountable.
However, a significant evening in August of 2022 acted as a catalyst, reigniting my dormant love affair with photography. It began as an excuse to revel in a balmy summer evening but ended with an ordinary photo-taking session that rekindled a lost spark. The Danish Royal Opera House and the Marble Church near the royal palace became my subjects that night—two photos that might not be extraordinary but held within them the power to reawaken my passion for exploration.
In my photography endeavors, sometimes my ventures yielded nothing, yet on other occasions, I returned home with one or two images that fueled my excitement to edit and share. Gradually, my collection expanded, and I found myself in possession of enough captivating moments to start sharing my photographic journey regularly.
While competent in capturing cityscapes and landscapes—especially at night, which became a niche of sorts—mastering the art of portraits remained a daunting challenge. My wife, often the subject of my attempts, shared my disappointment in the results. Improving my portrait photography skills has become a top priority on my photography agenda.
Revisiting Copenhagen that August evening was a turning point. The Marble Church, seemingly forgotten upon my return, became a renewed subject of intrigue. Standing opposite the Royal Danish Opera House, its dome formed a picturesque scene that I endeavored to capture with my camera.
While the outcomes of that particular night may not have been remarkable, they reignited feelings akin to the days I spent wandering the streets of Chongqing and Luoyang in China—days of unfettered exploration and discovery.
Later, by the water’s edge, as evening faded into night, I felt compelled to test my prowess in long-exposure photography of the city’s illuminated structures. Amidst setting up my tripod and capturing the mesmerizing lights, I found myself surrounded by curious passersby, intrigued by my methods and eager to learn. It was in that moment, amidst those inquiries and shared enthusiasm, that the familiar passion for photography resurfaced—a rediscovery that nudged me back toward capturing and sharing the beauty I witnessed.
And in that unexpected moment of interaction and shared enthusiasm, I found my purpose reignited. The desire to capture moments, explore the world through my lens, and share these experiences surged within me once more.
Looking ahead, this renewed passion serves as a compass guiding my journey in photography. It’s not just about perfecting my craft or capturing flawless images; it’s about embracing the imperfections, the learning curves, and the joy found in each step of this artistic expedition.
I’m now on a quest to delve deeper into the intricacies of portrait photography, determined to master the art that has so far eluded me. With each click of the shutter, I’m venturing into uncharted territories, seeking not just photographs but stories waiting to unfold.
So, as I step forward, camera in hand, I embrace the unpredictability, the challenges, and the triumphs that lie ahead. This is not just a resurgence in my love for photography; it’s the dawn of a new chapter—one filled with exploration, growth, and an unwavering passion to capture the beauty of life through my lens.
